13th Cracow New Year’s Eve Run

I say goodbye to 2016 traditionally – with running. Yet again I participated in the Cracow Run New Year’s Eve Run. Besides the regular competition, every year there’s a competition for the best costume and runners’ imagination truly knows no limits there!

SHORT REPORT

13th edition of the run gave me additional joy, beside the obvious competition, as the income from the run will be given to Foundation for Cardiac Surgery Schola Cordis.

Owing to the laid back atmosphere and the lack of emphasis on hard competition, this is a great opportunity to get familiar with the idea or running competitions or simply begin one’s running adventure. There is no stress you’ll stay at the very end. Among runners there are many children, elderly people, groups and families, peacefully marching and enjoying the atmosphere of the event. On the other hand, for those who want to race, there will also be a chance to find suitable rivals, as well as two possible routes: 5km and 10km. This year is also the first time runners have been given the opportunity to change the route – in either direction. It was possible to register on the 5km route, but during the race you could change your mind and take the longer one. No one was disqualified.

ORGANIZATION

13th Cracow New Year’s Eve Run was completed by 1,969 participants (last year it was 1957, so there was an attendance record again). The competition took place at two distances – Dragon five (5 km) and Joyful ten (10 km). The route led from the market square, through the commons and to the Wawel castle where the route split into 5 km (back through the commons, Floriańska Street and to the finish line on the market square) and Joyful Ten (through the Vistula boulevards, with a reverse point next to the Kazimierz shooping Center and back to the market.

Everything played well – great atmosphere created by the hundreds of masqueraders, who came rather for fun than for  sports competition. The route was well marked and protected and at the finish line everyone were smoothly wrapped in NRC blanket, given the commemorative medal and sent away to make room for the next finishers.

Polish rye soup with sausage is not really the meal vegetarians will like, but it’s the standard for the New Year’s Eve Run – I learned my lesson through the subsequent editions and took care of my own post-race meal.
